Provenance:
In the possession of a noble Italian family since the early 19th century;
Carlo Graf von Rex, Florence;
Sold Christie’s, London, 9 July 2015, lot 17.*
*The positive identification of the Italian vendor family provenance has been withheld by Messrs. Christie’s on grounds of ‘client confidentiality’. Graf von Rex has stated (Ms.
communication) ‘the picture has been in the family since the nineteenth century and was in an Italian family house in the country that was not affected by the war…’ This is
born out by the fact that the painting was auctioned furnished in a neoclassical Italian frame dating from c.1800. Owing to similar distortions harmonising with the stretcher
this frame clearly had accompanied the painting over the entire period in question. Christie’s (Ms. communication) have given an undertaking that the full identity of the family
concerned shall be revealed under strict client confidentiality to the eventual purchaser’s legal advisor if so required.
